Celtic Missional Advent December 24th: The Disciplined Life

December 24th: Saint Mochua of Timahoe
Matthew 2:1-2
The Missional life is a disciplined life

“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.””

Magi traveled from the east. The Christmas tradition tells us about three wise men from the east, who studied the stars, and in their studies found a prophecy of a coming king in Israel. They traveled to find the king who was to be born according to the astronomical prophecy. The disciplined study of the wise men, and devotion to follow their discoveries great distances, led them to the manger, and the new born Christ. Our disciplined devotion will lead us to know Christ better as well.

December 24th is Saint Mochua of Timahoe’s Day. Saint Mochua was a 7th century Irish saint. He was a Hermit and a healer. It is said, that he had no earthly possessions, but that he had three pets: a rooster, a mouse, and a fly. The rooster would wake him for the daily matins. The mouse would nibble his ear to wake him if he dosed during his prayer and study, and the fly would follow along his reading of the Psalter, and if he dosed would stop to mark the spot he ended his reading.

Prayer: Lord, help me to live the disciplined life. May I establish my life in Your rules, in the pursuit of You, in the service to others. May I find joy in Your Word, and joy in the worship of You.
